Lookup logic in Integration suite

What is typical recommendation for performing lookup in Integration suite. We have a flat file that is generated out of SAP.  Partner requires additional details that are not available in standard program and needs to be retrieved from S/4. 

In ECC days, we would not hesitate to customize the standard program (either through enhancements) to update the file. 

Considering the push to clean core paradigm, Would it make sense to generate the standard file and then do S/4 lookup in integration suite keeping the S/4 core clean?

What are typical best practice recommendations in such scenarios?

It depends...

But given your described context and following the much better defined "smart endpoints, dumb pipelines" mantra (than clean core), go for enhancements / custom inside S/4 runtime.

It gives you 1 transaction, so a consistent file.

Doing lookups in source or target system is a red flag (but can be necessary in a rare, particular context).
