Update October 2022

About the solution

SAP Human Capital Management for S/4HANA is now available as part of the SAP S/4HANA 2022 release. As previously communicated, the solution scope matches the SAP S/4HANA compatibility pack and the key functionality of SAP ERP HCM (EhP 8). SAP Travel Management (FI-TV) is also the SAP S/4HANA 2022 release.

There are no changes to our overall investment strategy.  SAP SuccessFactors remains the primary focus of our HCM innovation at SAP and we have no plans for major additional functional additions or re-architecture in SAP Human Capital Management for S/4HANA. So, for example,  RPTime will stay and the Infotypes will still be around. See a detailed view below. The solution will be successively optimized for operation with SAP S/4HANA.

In multiple customer meetings, I get questions about a comparison between SAP ERP HCM and SAP SuccessFactors. My colleague Imran Sajid recently wrote a great blog in which he describes “A Dozen Improvements in SAP SuccessFactors from SAP ERP HCM.“ If you are interested in those innovations, you can find them here:

Enhancements

All enhancements are listed in the SAP Road Map Explorer. Here are some of them:

User Experience and SAP Fiori

The existing SAP Fiori 2.0 apps for self-services are running in SAP Human Capital Management for S/4HANA. A new SAP Fiori role for HR professional was created which combines SAP Fiori UI and WDA-services for employee data maintenance. This also includes the support of the SAP Fiori 3 space concept. Also, there is an org-chart app to display the organization.

Employee Administration

The new Fiori role for HR professionals supports them to create vacancies when employees are leaving positions. Vacancies can also be delimited directly when assigning an employee to a position.

Time Management

There are optimizations for time-management customizing to improve collision definitions of absence types, and more transparent error handling in RPTIME about the error cause.

Payroll Processing

A new wage type information report with all relevant wage type configuration details in one consolidated place is available. This enables the payroll team to troubleshoot production issues caused by an inaccurate wage type configuration.

The off-cycle workbench to replace an unsuccessful payment with a transfer, the consolidation of posting reports, an automated clearing process for bank transfer after payment replacement and some more are enhanced as well.

Processes & Forms

A new analytical SAP Fiori app supports to analyze the processes initiated by employees, managers, or HR professionals by using HANA views and gain insights of processes and their status such as average processing time, workload, error rate etc.

There are also some more technical oriented enhancements like HCM content for SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit, master-data integration (MDI) content provider, and more.

As mentioned above, find more in the SAP Road Map Explorer.

Migration

Customers will be able to run HCM embedded or on a separate SAP S/4HANA instance based on their current deployment model and go-forward preference. We offer migration tools and services to facilitate a nondisruptive migration from SAP ERP HCM or SAP S/4HANA compatibility pack. One common question I got is “what can we do to prepare? Do we need to upgrade to EhP8 up front.” The answer is no, there is no need to upgrade before you convert to SAP Human Capital Management for SAP S/4HANA.

As you can see SAP Human Capital Management for S/4HANA is also available as a private cloud offering as part of RISE with SAP. This supports customers to move their on-premise solution into a cloud-based deployment with the same functionality. The private cloud offering (PCE) is only available for Core HR (Core HCM, Time Tracking, and Payroll).

Customer can use existing tools like:

  • SAP S/4HANA Conversion Guide here:

  • Custom Code Migration Guide for SAP S/4HANA here:

Please check always for the latest version of those guides and tools.

As part of SAP Business Suite wide simplification including the 'principle of one strategy', some of the known SAP HCM ERP functionality will not be part of SAP Human Capital Management  for SAP S/4HANA. Have a look at the SAP Note “SAP HCM for SAP S/4HANA – General Approach and Strategy” here.

All listed simplifications in the note are also part of the SAP S/4HANA Readiness Check and SAP Simplification Item Catalog. More information about SAP Readiness Check is available here:

Commercialization and Pricing

Our approach is to harmonize pricing across all HCM / HXM solutions. Therefore we moved to a pricing approach that contains three scenarios for Core HR (SAP Core Human Capital Management for SAP S/4HANA, SAP Time Tracking for SAP S/4HANA and SAP Payroll Processing for SAP S/4HANA). The SAP Learning Solution for SAP S/4HANA is also available, SAP E-Recruiting for SAP S/4HANA as an add-on is planned for December. All materials codes will include the so-called engines and user rights with one metric “Employee”. A license conversion is needed to move to SAP Human Capital Management for S/4HANA within the existing SAP S/4HANA conversion policy.

As mentioned above Core HR solutions are available as private cloud (PCE) offering.

For any questions reach out to your sales representative.

Maintenance Strategy

With regards to the maintenance strategy for SAP S/4HANA (September 2022) SAP announced a change in its release and maintenance strategy for SAP S/4HANA (see press release here).

The release 2023 of SAP S/4HANA, available in October of 2023, represents a go-to release for next-generation technology and compatibility with legacy software. From this release, SAP S/4HANA will change to a two-year release cycle, a longer seven years of mainstream maintenance per release, and more easily adoptable feature packs. In support of this major milestone, SAP will offer customers on releases 1709, 1809, and 1909 of SAP S/4HANA an extended maintenance option, which will enable customers to directly upgrade to the 2023 version. SAP’s announcement that until 2040, there will always be at least one release of SAP S/4HANA in maintenance remains unchanged.

Thank you - this will make our modernization strategy much more in line with previous efforts (our SAP solution suite is over 20 years old); and we all know that change can be risky - especially in HR and Payroll solutions. This will allow us to explore the immediate improvements in Finance and Logistics offered in S/HANA - while allowing us to more gradually perform HR transformation in a more reasonable fashion.

As this replaces the side-car option, will the maintenance support be also until 2030 only? I noticed from the slide that 2030 is already omitted.  Does this mean that there are no definite plans yet for end of maintenance for this new option?

Yes, maintenance will follow the overall SAP S/4HANA maintenance strategy. Please see more details here

Hi Ralf,

In your slide on the scope of SAP HCM for S/4HANA, you list Public Sector but list PY-DE-PS explicitly (Germany Public Sector)… would other country specific public sector solutions be covered, eg. PY-GB-PS for Great Britain?

Thanks in advance,

Stephen

As for "Personnel Cost Planning" the very old component PA-CM-CP is mentioned as being supported. Am I right that this is a mistake? The current solution "Personnel Cost Planning and Simulation" would be PA-CP.

Hi Ralf,

in all the slides this solution is clearly only available for S/4HANA on premise. My question: what about S/4HANA STE (That is in fact a S/4HANA on premise running at a hyperscaler)? Technically this shoudln'd be an issue....

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Just to be clear, if a customer converts to SAP HCM for SAP S/4HANA, that solution will be available and supported through 2040, correct?

Thanks

Hi Ralf,

We currently have our FI & HCM in a single ERP instance  & FI would like to move to S/4 HANA Cloud.

Is the following cloud option available? i.e. co-deploy (SAP HCM for SAP S/4HANA / Cloud) in an SAP S/4 HANA Cloud environment (single instance)?

I believe that if you use the HCM/PY compatibility packs support ends in 2025. The yet to be revealed S4 HCM/PY solution would then have to be deployed/implemented to be covered to 2040.

Greg, in response to your post last week, our understanding, based on Ralf's slide above and on the associated OSS note (2881788) is as follows (and it would be great if someone from SAP could confirm/review this understanding):

  1. The Do Nothing approach- If you are a current customer on one of the release levels listed below you are supported until 2027 with all Core components including HCM, extended maintenance available until 2030.

  2. Upgrade to S/4 HANA including the new SAP HCM for SAP S/4HANA,after 3rd quarter 2022 but before 2027 - you are supported until 2027 with all Core components including HCM, extended maintenance available until 2040.

  3. Upgrade to S/4 HANA before 3rd quarter 2022 - For HCM you can use the Compatibility packs until 2025 and then if you convert tto he new SAP HCM for S/4 HANA you are supported until 2027 with all Core components including HCM, extended maintenance available until 2040.

From OSS note 2881788:

This note reflects the current status of planning and may be updated at short notice.

(**) After 2025, SAP will provide mainstream maintenance for the following SAP Business Suite 7 Enhancement Packages until December 31, 2027 and provide optional extended maintenance from January 1, 2028 until December 31, 2030:

  • EHP6 FOR SAP ERP 6.0 (release level: 6.06) - support non-unicode and unicode deployments

  • EHP7 FOR SAP ERP 6.0 (release level: 6.17) - support non-unicode and unicode deployments

  • EHP8 FOR SAP ERP 6.0 (release level: 6.18) - support unicode deployments

Great summary Jeff! We’re facing same challenge and have reached somewhat similar understanding regarding available S4/HANA transition options for HCM customers that are currenty on SAP ECC 6.0. Yet I would actually see point [3] being split in two sub-scenarios (see “migration options” diagram in original blog post):

3a. Use compatibility pack co-deployed in S4/HANA (single instance) till 2025 (end of usage rights for single instance CP); Convert to HCM for S/4 HANA by then, get mainstream maintenance till 2040.

3b. Use compatibility pack as sidecar of S4/HANA (deployed in same HANA DB, but as additional instance) till 2027 (mainstream maintenance) or 2030 (extended maintenance); Convert to HCM for S/4 HANA by then, get mainstream maintenance till 2040.

Beside your questions, I would also appreciate, if someone from SAP could explain how would technical effort look like, to realize those [3a] and [3b] compatability pack conversions back to that plateau – HCM for S/4 HANA (released 2022-Q3).

Thanks Reinis, you are correct, I missed the sub scenarios (great title!). Hopefully someone from SAP will respond to our questions, regards, Jeff

Good summary but to slightly tweak option 2 & 3 …

2. Upgrade to S/4 HANA including the new SAP HCM for SAP S/4HANA,after 3rd quarter 2022 but before 2027 – you are now using S4HANA and supported until (at least) 2040.

3. Upgrade to S/4 HANA before 3rd quarter 2022 – For HCM you can use the Compatibility packs until 2025 and then if you convert to the new SAP HCM for S/4 HANA then you are now using S4HANA and supported until (at least) 2040.

i.e. I'm making the point that SAP HCM for S/4HANA has the same end of life as S/4HANA. I think Reinis is also making this point in his reply below.

The SAP S/4HANA conversion policy is typically crediting the engine investment. However, SAP HCM is no engine, and is included in named users. How will this work out ?

Dear Ralf,

We are wondering about the sustainability of HR-RENEWAL and Payroll Control Center in this new H4-S4/HANA. Does SAP plan to transform HR Renewal with FIORI apps or replace it with something new ?

In PAM, the end of maintenance of HR Renewal has is planned at the end of 2027.

Best regards,

Simon

nothing decided so far. More to come in early 2021. We will use Fiori for some additional scenarios but there are no plans at the moment to replace HR-Renewal entirely.

Hi Suresh,

I don't think so:

For the payroll, you have Employee Central Payroll as a cloud solution.

Hi Ralf

I am wondering if there is any updated information on the future state of Payroll Control Center. We are looking at implementing this on our S/4HANA system but not sure what the shelf life would be of this solution.

If we are already on S/4HANA does this mean that we only have usage rights of Payroll Control Center until 2025 under the compatibility scope matrix?

Is there a successor solution available for the payroll control center functionality?

Thanks

Hallo Ralf,

what about LSO in S/4HANA on premise? We are using already SF LMS but it is nearly impossible to create invoices for external learners from there so this is still done via LSO. Maybe there is already a strategy/possibility on how to solve this under S4/HANA or with Success Factors?

Thanks in advance and best regards

Hallo Ralf,

interesting to see, that this Blog post has now modified the release date quietly from Q3 to Q4 2022. Would you say it is probable that the solution then would be settled on an S/4HANA 2022 along with its general availability or rather on an S/4HANA 2021 FPS stack? Also if there have been some problems identified to postpone the release would you say it is possible that it could be postponed again beyond Q4 2022?

Hello,

yes, as the SAP S/4HANA 2022 release date was shifted from Q3 to Q4. H4S4 availability was shifted also as it will be delivered as part of the SAP S/4HANA 2022 release.

Hello,

In note 3044085 - FAQ - Use and Future of HCM module in S/4HANA OnPremise it is said that ITS transactions will not be supported in H4S4 as WDJ. We are a bit worried about the Web Gui transactions that we widely use for our HR administrators users ( PA30, spécific reports in ABAP, SP01, ... )

What does it means precisely ? That it will not be possible to have WebGUI transaction in H4S4 ? We have tested to display WebGui transaction on a HANA portal system and it seems to work.

Or it is just to precise that the goal is to have new UI5 or WDA transactions to cover all the functionnal scope of HCM ? (including PA30)

Because we have planned to rebuild our old WDJ transactions but not all our Web Gui transactions.

Thank you for your help

I am curious about compatibility of the following older SAP HR (on premise) modules with S/4 HANA

  1. SAP Performance Appraisals (AKA “Appraisal Systems (PA-PD-AP)”) .

  2. SAP-TEM (AKA “SAP Training and Event Management (PE)”)

  3. SAP Qualifications and Requirements Module

We still have above on premise modules and have not upgraded to the newer releases like OSA (Objective Setting and Appraisals or SAP LSO or Talent Management)

Hi,

In our system we use what we call MBO (Management by Objectives) module with appraisal templates

Transactions : OOAm, APPCHANGE, ... , tables : HRHAP*, ..., PD object : VA, VB, VC, ...

( package : PPAP, ... , application composant : CA-GTF-AP, PA-PD-AP, ...)

We have planed to rebuild our old Web Dynpro Java transactions in UI5 which are not supported on HANA.

But ou idea it to keep the data model with Appraisal templates.

So I hope the module ( data model and ABAP transactions) will be supported. But it is what i have understand.

Dear Ralf,

will it still be possible for the customer after Q4/2022 to do the S/4HANA transformation with the current version (S/4HANA 2021) including HCM in Compatibility mode?

If the customer uses the S/4HANA 2022 Release, is there still an option to start with compmode and switch on H4S4 later?

Thanks in advance

Hi Ralf.
Regarding H4S4 and LSO.

The LSO Java-based components will not be available in S/4 - like Content player and Authoring environment.

With S/4 SAP is introducing and pushing for clients to start using SAP Enable Now for context-sensitive in-app help in S/4HANA.
SAP Enable Now comprise of funtionalities like:

  • Playing e-learning content, including SCORM-based courses

  • Runs on-premise

  • Have rapid authoring capabilities

  • Supports single source recordings

  • Features for customizable learning content

All of the above seems to cover the current LSO Java-based functions.
So, will it be able to use SAP Enable Now instead for the current LSO Java-components - and how will the interaction with LSO look like?

What are SAP's plan in this area?
To me it would make sense to have on-premise clients pay the license for SAP Enable Now rather than forcing clients to use and integrate a LSO on-premise product from another vendor.

I hope for a positive answer 🙂

Hm,

As far as I understand you will probably need to re-implement your Appraisals and Learning in the new modules. In my experience this is more of an issue for Appraisals as the data model is radically different (new objects, infotypes, custo tables...) whereas LSO uses new data objects (curriculum types, curricula...) in combination with the SAP-TEM ones (business event type, business event...)

Hi,

Actualy it is the very old module called "Objective Settings & Appraisals" in SPRO that will be not supported. In ou case we use what it is called "Appraisals Systems" in SPRO. The issue is that it is not easy to know which submodules are involved ( PA-PD-AP versus CA-GTF-AP ?).

Hi Team,

We are also using the older SAP 'Appraisals' module (  PA-PD-AP) and were told that this old module will not be supported in HANA. we are looking at migration to SuccessFactors. Not sure if anybody has done the data migration (appraisals history) from the old appraisals module to SuccessFactors

We are also using the old SAP-TEM module (not LSO, but the version before that called SAP Training and Events Module). We are not sure it this older module is supported / compatible in HANA ?

Anja Wilde has a really good blog about compatibility packs at the system level and lots of useful references. It is a good companion to Ralf's excellent blog this comment is part of.

I found key take aways such as even if you 'only' have the HCM/PY CP's there is likely a lot of other functional areas whose custom code and reports use that data. They will need reviewed at a minimum and likely replaced. It is an opportunity to leverage this to see where excess custom code and associated technical debt might be replaced with standard reporting and processes from SAP.
